2014 Race Reviews from the pen of Mark & Nikki Benham

A busy year of racing is nearly at an end. No doubt you will be planning your races for next Spring and beyond. Here are a few brief reviews from the Benham’s of races we ran this Spring, which might help you out with a selection or two….part 2 (Summer & Autumn) will follow in due course.Mark & Nikki

Port of Palma de Mallorca 10k  (March)

Enjoyable run along the flat seafront route.  A half marathon is run at the same time with a second loop. Very good attendance and atmosphere. Easily accessible via Southend Airport. Medal, T-shirt…….. and sun tan. Rating 8/10

Bungay (Suffolk) Black Dog Half Marathon (April)

Bit of a distance to travel, so we broke the journey with an overnight stay in Woodbridge. A Marathon is run as two loops of a very undulating route. Race was well supported and marshalled – finished with the last couple of miles on a trail route, which was a nice twist at the end. Medal but a long drive home. Rating 7/10
Crown to Crown 5k series

Very enjoyable race put on every 2nd Wednesday of month through summer by Pitsea RC at Langdon Hills. Mainly off road through the woods with a very stiff uphill finish for last mile. Rating 8/10.
Colchester 10k (May)

A fast flat route with definite pb potential, indeed Nicki did just that. However unfortunately the marshalling and atmosphere was a little disappointing, although the finish does include a lap of a running track which was good. Medal and good “goodie” bag. Rating 7/10
Great Baddow 10m (May)

Excellent race run in very hot conditions this year, which meant that another water station would have been nice. Sponges provided at roughly half way however. Undulating route provides a stiff test, but is a good prep for Southend Half. Good events afterwards including post race massage. No medal, but a “finishers” mug & sunburn. Rating 9/10
Hatfield Broad Oak 10k (Late May Bank Holiday)

14 miles NW of Chelmsford the village attracted 1200 runners to the 29th running of this race. Excellent support from all the community and a great atmosphere. A pretty fast route that brought Nicki another pb Lots for the family to do at various stalls & a fete. A 1 mile fun run was held for the kids. Finishers T-shirt and excellent fudge stall, along with tasty hotdog & bread & butter pudding.

Rating 10/10

Hope it helps!
